Section Two: Letters of Recommendation We can often learn a lot about people by listening to what others say about them. The following are written by people I have worked for and with, and spent extensive time with. Recommendation for Glenn Carlson 11-21-09 When Glenn asked me to write him a letter of recommendation, my first thought was, “Where do I begin?” In three short months, he utterly transformed the interior of a 4-bedroom rental house that was in such bad shape we were seriously considering tearing it down. Problems included extensive water damage and pet damage to walls, floors, and subfloors; broken or deteriorated cabinetry, doors, and windows; and structural issues like non-level and out-of-alignment door frames, floors, walls. All this began to change when Glenn arrived with his trailer full of tools and for three months worked diligently, patiently, and creatively on this home – “magically” transforming it. From Day One, we knew we were in good hands. His knowledge, craftsmanship, and pride in his work, his genuine concern for our home satisfied us beyond our greatest expectations. Let me share my direct experience with Glenn as a person. He is a great communicator -- an empathic listener, sensitive and responsive -- and extremely genuine and transparent. He has a great sense of humor, which may not seem important but a little humor is a precious thing. On more than one occasion I was all for giving up, but Glenn’s insistence that he could “make it happen” would carry the day, and he made sure it did. Glenn truly cares about his work and the people he works for. Best of all, Glenn is incredibly knowledgeable, organized, responsible, patient beyond belief, and when necessary willing to work extra hours or make trips on his own to find unusual parts for specialized repairs. From day one he apprised us of the numerous processes involved, helped us understand the best strategies to approach problems, clarified issues and options, and outlined procedures– all resulting in cost-effective solutions that he then implemented. He conveyed important information clearly and consistently, and we came to truly trust and rely on his judgment concerning the best way to approach any situation – including, on several occasions, problems with work done by other professionals we’d called in for specific services. He has a useful familiarity with many construction-related activities, protected our interests, and became our eyes and ears on the project and our communicator in the field. Glenn is a master of details – no problem or inconsistency escapes his attention. He has highly developed creative skills. He was always maximally efficient in his use of both materials and his time (he never slacked on the job and is in fact one of the most energetic and super-conscientious people I know). In short, he made it his goal to save us money while achieving the most lasting, useful effect. To say merely that he is a “high quality” craftsman does not do him justice: he really was a gift to us, for the project could not have been completed without him. We can’t thank Glenn enough for taking such good care of us and our home. Please don’t hesitate to call. I am eager to help ensure that he gets a great new project, and, believe me, you’ll be lucky indeed if you’re able to hire him, to have a craftsman who has your best interests at heart. Gratefully, Derede Arthur and Rob Michalski Professors at UC Santa Cruz and Santa Clara University KM Construction Pacific Grove, CA 93950 LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION FOR GLENN CARLSON To whom it may concern: Glenn worked for me during 2004 on three multimillion-dollar custom homes in Pebble Beach, CA. His initial task on the first project was fine-tuning dozens of doors and windows, and installing doorknobs and hardware. Within two weeks, the project foreman chose Glenn to be in charge of the hardware crew. He contributed with excellent attention to detail and corrected numerous mistakes by his coworkers. As that project neared completion, we selected Glenn to finish the details on another one of our projects. He worked on the interior and exterior, in a variety of capacities. He demonstrated concern for perfection and displayed his artistic talents as well. The homeowners, the foreman and myself were all very happy with Glenn’s ability to communicate, work hard and get the job done well. The project manager was so pleased with Glenn’s performance that he personally selected him to assist in finishing another expensive home near Pebble Beach Lodge. There he was responsible for final completion of details inside the home, as well as overseeing painters and other trade professionals who were involved. Glenn’s eye for detail and fine-tuned skills were clearly evident in his performance. He completed or corrected work previously done by other carpenters. He exhibited his artistic skills and precision in many ways, allowing our timely completion. Glenn is willing to get the job done right, and his various duties were done to my complete satisfaction. I hope he works for me again. I am pleased to recommend him. Sincerely, Kevin Raph Recommendation for Glenn Carlson 10-18-08 Andrew Thompson Legacy Construction, Carmel, CA. The first thing that comes to mind about Glenn is that he’s responsible and has a take-charge attitude. It shows in his performance. He is competent, skilled and does great work. I quickly learned that I could trust his judgment. One year after our first building project, I called Glenn and invited him to come back to work for me, helping me remodel my personal home in Carmel. He’s dependable, reliable and does what he says he’ll do. He’s a great person to have working for you, makes solid contributions on the job and is very skilled with tools. His experience in many areas is clearly evident. He’s friendly and communicative, intelligent and articulate. We developed a friendship. He’s a positive guy and I believe he would be a positive influence for any employer or customer. If you have questions, please call me. Andrew Thompson Carmel, CA ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬ I couldn’t be happier about our experience with Glenn Carlson. He readily surveyed our project, established a plan of action, a budget and time goals to meet our needs. His skill level resulted in good advice to us and a quality outcome. He is a pleasure to do business with. Marilyn and Jim Catlin LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION FOR MR. GLENN CARLSON Mr. Carlson has been managing construction on my home over the last two years, 2002, 20... and through the current date of February 29th, 2004. Over that time Glenn has displayed his skills as a carpenter, his innovation, management skills, and speedy work again and again. He not only has the skills, necessary tools and machinery, but he determinedly applies himself to finishing the projects quickly. The projects included every facet of remodeling that a carpenter might be asked to attempt. All finished with the highest quality workmanship. Glenn Carlson has always lived up to every commitment he has made with me and has shown he is a man of great integrity. This man has saved me money and left me completely satisfied with his work and I can’t recommend him highly enough. Sincerely, Robert M Pierce Recommendation for Glenn Carlson March 8, 2004 To Whom It May Concern: I have known Glenn Carlson since 1998, having worked with him on several high-end projects. Glenn recently spearheaded a kitchen remodel in my personal residence. His uncanny sense of style, creativity and knack for improvisation made the layout and design aspects of the project seem almost effortless. Glenn has a unique appreciation of beauty as well as a keen grasp of color. He turned a dingy, poorly laid out kitchen into a beautiful space, the absolute centerpiece of my home. His carpentry skills saved me a considerable amount of money, as we were able to reposition and “doll up” the existing cabinetry. His trim work and tile setting skills are remarkable. I’ve received numerous compliments on the marble countertops and the stunning Brazilian Cherry trim. Glenn approaches his workday with vigor and is always detail and perfection oriented. His craftsmanship is unsurpassed. He works efficiently and is always looking for creative ways to add value to the task at hand. He also possesses all the tools of the trade necessary to take on any home renovation project. I know Glenn to be an honest man with superior communication skills that give him an ability to deal with a wide range of personalities. I personally and most highly recommend him for any creative, fine finishing, remodeling project. Sincerely, Carl Prosch-Jensen Sandra Storwick I am writing to recommend both the work and the person of Glenn Carlson. He continually exceeded my expectations with his commitment to a very high quality of work, his ability to creatively solve problems, his integrity and willingness to make the extra effort required to insure an exceptional result. Glenn always gave 110%. He has an eye for color, style, innovative design and cost effectively incorporates functionality. Glenn is a highly skilled carpenter and painter, an accomplished craftsman with the skill and commitment to finish projects beautifully. I appreciate the high standards he has for his work. (He finished a Yoga Wall rope system for me and did a wonderful job.) He’s extremely skilled with a wide diversity of tools. When he needed a specific tool for a specialized job, he willingly purchased it with his own funds. This is only one example to his efficiency and determination to create the best possible result. Glenn stepped into a role of helping me over-see the home projects I was working on. He took responsibility for contacting and overseeing other trades people. He kept clear, concise records of costs and work done, and was very conscious and careful with expenses. He’s an excellent communicator and kept me informed of processes, decisions and factors involved in the various challenges of the job. His suggestions were very helpful. He patiently outlined options for a particular aspect of the project, letting me know the advantages and disadvantages of each. He definitely has the intelligence, patience and determination to make things work.
