Small job - need to scale back part of fireplace mantel, 2 columns on either side are too high. Need to cut off and cap. Painting already scheduled later so no painting needed.

It is installed in a brick opening and suspended on some sort of wood platform. The platform is somewhat rotted, due to a roof leak I had a while back, so it needs to be replaced. The installer for new vent hood was stymied as to how to do it, as it is only accessible from the bottom. Can you help, please?
